How to Organize Your Bathroom Reading Material

This post contains affiliate links.  I thank you for making a purchase through one of these links.  The few pennies I will receive will help to maintain this blog

Today I am taking a break from the kitchen to update a post I wrote four years ago about two magazine racks I purchased for my bathrooms.  Sometimes the fact that I am the only female living in a male dominated home reveals itself in mundane ways.  One of those ways is the stack of reading materials that grows and grows in the bathrooms.

Do you know what I am talking about?  There are magazines on the back of the toilet.  There are magazines on the floor.  There are magazines on the vanity.  I'm forever picking up, stacking and culling magazines in the bathroom.  That was until I purchased wall-mounted magazine racks.  Finally, an answer to the disorganization caused by reading materials in the bathroom..

I wanted to provide an update to my original post because I realized it has been four years since my purchase and both magazine racks are in excellent, like new condition.  These were a really great purchase and both of these racks are still available.  If you are in need of wall-mounted magazine and toilet tissue holders, these might be perfect for you, too.  I love them and know you will, too.
Use Wall-Mounted Magazine Racks to Organize Your Bathroom

Originally, my search for a wall-mounted magazine rack was a challenge because there weren't many options.  I wanted a polished chrome or nickel rack to blend with the other hardware in the bathrooms.  I found two excellent choices, one of which was a steal.  The first option can be found at Restoration Hardware and originally cost me $125.00.  It is now (6/8/2017) listed at a final sale price of $85. The Chatham combination magazine rack and tissue holder is attractive, easy to mount on the wall, and is excellent quality.

The second choice for a very similar combination rack and tissue holder can be found at several stores including Walmart for $38.24 and Overstock.com for $38.59.  These prices make this rack the "steal"!

The "steal" rack has an inch wider footprint than the Chatham rack and is mounted to the wall with visible screws.

The Chatham rack slides onto hidden mounting disks and has a cleaner look on the wall.

I bought them both.  My then, newly remodeled, powder room had raised panels that were too narrow for the "steal".  The Chatham rack fits the space perfectly.

My upstairs bathroom was also in need of reading material organization, so the "steal" rack found a home there.

Which should you buy?  In my opinion, both are excellent organizational options for your bathroom.  The "steal" rack wins as the overall preference because of the quality, functionality, and the really great price.  If the size of the rack (one inch shorter width) is a concern for you, as it was for me in my powder room, then the Chatham rack may be the right choice for you.  It is excellent quality and very attractive, but you'll pay more.

Oh, in case you are wondering, I hang the toilet tissue with the ends hanging over the front, not behind.

If you like this magazine rack you may also like this "deal" I chose for a wall mounted cabinet.

    1. I fought a losing battle over the bathroom reading clutter for years. I'm much happier now with the organization from the rack.

  3. Donna, I am looking at both of these also. Is the RH one heavier than the OI one? What about the finish? Are both
of these in chrome? Does the finish and overall quality of the OI holder seem more cheaply made? These are all similar to the Samuel Heath Novio. One more question. I see that the RH has somewhat of a back, holditng the magazines away from the wall. What about the OI? Do the magazines lean against the wall? I know that the RH holder is brass with heavy plating and the OI is tubular steel. I am not certain how much of a difference that actually makes. Pottery Barn sells something similar, fyi. Thanks for your help.

  4. Hi Cornelia. The RH rack is a bit sleeker than the "steal" rack. Both are chrome and look shiny and bright. The magazines lean in both, but are a bit more upright in the RH rack. I have owned the RH rack for longer than the "steal" rack and it continues to look bright and shiny. I continue to think both are great options and if price is a major factor the "steal" is definitely a good buy. I hope this helps.

  5. Donna,e I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate all of the knowledge you have shared with me about these racks. I could not have done it without you. I just purchased the "deal" rack. Now this rack is sold in different places over the internet and the original site that I saw it was on Ebay. I looked there and saw that it was $55, I then thought I should check back to see what you had paid. REALLY appreciate the links. I ended up purchasing from Walmart for $35 and free shipping. I would have never have thought to look there if you had not done the legwork for me.

I also want to tell you that I really appreciate the time and energy that you put into this blog. It provides a wealth of information and you write in such an enjoyable fashion. I know it can be very time consuming to write in such a thoughtful manner and I, for one, am very grateful.

An Off-Season Visit to Ogunquit, Maine

Visit Ogunquit, ME Do you need to get away this weekend?  Try a weekend in Maine. Early November is a great time of year for a weekend getaway in New England.   This year, for the second time, we spent a couple of days in the lovely seaside town of Ogunquit, Maine .  At just 120 miles from Providence, Rhode Island and 75 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, Ogunquit is easily accessible by car for New Englanders. How to Deal with Carpenter Bees

One of the things I like least about this time of year is the pests.  I'm talking about the insects and critters that wreak havoc with my home and garden. The pest of the month is the carpenter bee.  Last month the battle was with ants and in April, we were fighting the annual infestation of winter moth caterpillars that are trying to kill my beautiful weeping cherry tree.  Those battles seem to be behind me and for now, the focus is on the pesky carpenter bees. You might be wondering what the heck a carpenter bee is.  I never even knew they existed until a couple of years ago.  You can see the backside of one in the picture below.  They might be mistaken for a big bumblebee, but their abdomen is shiny black in comparison to the fuzzy abdomen of the bumblebee.  You'll often see them hovering in the air around the roofline of your home.  If you see them, you'll want to pay attention.  They may take up residence in your home. How to Arrange Hydrangeas

If you are lucky, you live in a place where hydrangeas grow in abundance.  New England is one of those places.  Summer in New England is a feast for the eyes with all of the hydrangea bushes in full bloom. Tips for Making Beautiful Hydrangea Arrangements for Your Home Hydrangea Arrangement Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers, so as soon as the blossoms start to open you'll find me cutting them to bring into the house.  I have eight hydrangea bushes so there are plenty of blossoms to choose from.  All but one of my hydrangea bushes are a gorgeous blue color.  The other one is a deep, lovely purple that I love as well. Purple Hydrangeas Hydrangeas can be a challenge to arrange because they are so top heavy.  I like to use wide, short vases for my arrangements and I find that the hydrangea blossoms will often topple out of the vase.  The same is true for lilacs and peonies that also grow in my yard. Keeping them corralled in the vase can be a challenge.

Grandma's Soft and Chewy Date-Filled Cookies

One of the things I can count on as the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons arrive each year is a feeling of nostalgia.
