Rum Punch for a Party!

Can you make a rum punch ahead of time?

This rum punch recipe is a make-ahead recipe I use whenever we are having a large group for a summer picnic or barbecue.  Use the recipe below as your baseline and double or triple the ingredients as needed.

How do you serve rum punch?

You'll need a large container for storage and room enough in your refrigerator to keep it cool.  My favorite way to serve the rum punch is in these pretty glass pitchers or a beverage dispenser for self-serve convenience.

Rum Punch for a Party
I like to use multiple beverage dispensers and include plenty of water and non-alcoholic beverages in them, too.  Clear glass is always my favorite choice so the contents can easily be seen, especially when they are colorful like this rum punch.

Clear glassware is best for serving rum punch, too.  Part of the fun of rum punch cocktails is the color.  You'll want to be able to enjoy the whole experience so choose clear glassware.  Opt for clear plastic beverage cups over colored ones when serving at a picnic or barbecue.

How much alcohol do you use in rum punch?

You can easily adjust this recipe. As written, the recipe serves 10.
To make one cocktail at a time:  To make this rum punch one cocktail at a time, just replace the word "cup" with the word "ounce". For a fun twist, reserve the grenadine to float on the top of the cocktail.  It will sink to the bottom and create a festive effect.
For a mocktail, just replace the rum with your favorite lemon-lime soda.

What fruit makes the best garnish for a rum punch?

Use pineapple, lime, and orange slices as garnish. Don't forget a cherry!

    1. Hi. Hmmm..... My only suggestion is to check your measurements. We make this punch all the time with very consistent results. We usually use the products shown. If you are substituting other brands your results might differ.

  2. I want to make this for a wedding for 100 people. How many bottles of rum do you think I'll need?

    1. You’ll need to do some math to figure this out. For one drink you’ll use 2 ounces of dark rum and one ounce of regular rum. For 100 people, each having one drink you’ll need 200 ounces of dark rum and 100 ounces of regular rum. Convert the ounces to liters to determine the number of bottles. Everyone will not have a drink and some will have more than one, so you’ll need to adjust the total ounces by some factor. I’m not a caterer, so I can’t tell you what tha would be. A caterer or liquor store might be able to help.

DIY Cheap and Effective Rug Cleaning

Using area rugs throughout your house help to make your home feel warm and inviting.  Area rugs help absorb noise and add pops of color to complement your decor.  How do you keep rugs clean and smelling fresh? It can be a challenge. While regular vacuuming is important, you'll want to deep clean your rugs periodically, especially if you own pets. Here's a cheap and effective rug-cleaning method I use. An Off-Season Visit to Ogunquit, Maine

Visit Ogunquit, ME Do you need to get away this weekend?  Try a weekend in Maine. Early November is a great time of year for a weekend getaway in New England.   This year, for the second time, we spent a couple of days in the lovely seaside town of Ogunquit, Maine .  At just 120 miles from Providence, Rhode Island and 75 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, Ogunquit is easily accessible by car for New Englanders. An Easy Drive to Ogunquit, Maine Off season, Ogunquit is a quiet little town with a quaint main street.  That makes it perfect for an afternoon stroll. A Quaint Main Street Where to Stay When Visiting Ogunquit, Maine Be aware that many of the town's hotels and restaurants close during the fall and winter, but you'll still have plenty of wonderful options.    We stayed at the Juniper Hill Inn, a well-priced, clean and friendly hotel located on Main Street in Ogunquit.  It is a short walk from the beach which makes it a winner in my book.  The staff at the ho

How to Arrange Hydrangeas

If you are lucky, you live in a place where hydrangeas grow in abundance.  New England is one of those places.  Summer in New England is a feast for the eyes with all of the hydrangea bushes in full bloom. Tips for Making Beautiful Hydrangea Arrangements for Your Home Hydrangea Arrangement Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers, so as soon as the blossoms start to open you'll find me cutting them to bring into the house.  I have eight hydrangea bushes so there are plenty of blossoms to choose from.  All but one of my hydrangea bushes are a gorgeous blue color.  The other one is a deep, lovely purple that I love as well. Purple Hydrangeas Hydrangeas can be a challenge to arrange because they are so top heavy.  I like to use wide, short vases for my arrangements and I find that the hydrangea blossoms will often topple out of the vase.  The same is true for lilacs and peonies that also grow in my yard. Keeping them corralled in the vase can be a challenge.

How to Deal with Carpenter Bees

One of the things I like least about this time of year is the pests.  I'm talking about the insects and critters that wreak havoc with my home and garden. The pest of the month is the carpenter bee.  Last month the battle was with ants and in April, we were fighting the annual infestation of winter moth caterpillars that are trying to kill my beautiful weeping cherry tree.  Those battles seem to be behind me and for now, the focus is on the pesky carpenter bees. You might be wondering what the heck a carpenter bee is.  I never even knew they existed until a couple of years ago.  You can see the backside of one in the picture below.  They might be mistaken for a big bumblebee, but their abdomen is shiny black in comparison to the fuzzy abdomen of the bumblebee.  You'll often see them hovering in the air around the roofline of your home.  If you see them, you'll want to pay attention.  They may take up residence in your home. Forgotten Pork Chops-A Skillet Dinner

Grandma's Soft and Chewy Date-Filled Cookies

One of the things I can count on as the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons arrive each year is a feeling of nostalgia. The traditional foods we serve at our family's holiday tables can sure bring out all the feels.
