Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice Blend

Does fall make you crave all things pumpkin spice?  Or is it all things pumpkin you crave?  My guess is your cravings are instigated by the aroma and flavors of the spice combination that makes up our traditional pumpkin spice mix.

What is that mysterious blend of spices we call pumpkin spice? It is definitely a sign of the fall season and is not just for pumpkin pies.

How to Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice Mix

Pumpkin spice mix is a blend of common spices.

If you are a fan of pumpkin spice flavors you'll want to make up your own pumpkin spice mix to have plenty on hand for the fall and holidays.

You'll be happy to know the spices in a traditional pumpkin spice mix are not exotic and you may already have them on hand in your pantry.

The Basics About Pumpkin Spice Mix

The spices used to make a pumpkin spice blend are common.  They are cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves, nutmeg, and allspice.

The combination of spices varies among commercial pumpkin spice mixes and in online recipes. Cinnamon is the predominant spice with nuance provided by the balance of the other spices.

You can easily make your own spice mix with the spices you have on hand.  You definitely want to combine cinnamon, ground ginger, and nutmeg.  Ground cloves and allspice will enhance your mix but you can leave them out if you don't have any.

Here's how I make my pumpkin spice blend.

I like to store my pumpkin spice seasoning in an empty spice jar with a shaker lid. You can get some spice jars here. It's perfect to keep beside my coffee maker to give my morning coffee a topping of pumpkin spice on chilly mornings.

Use your pumpkin spice mix in any baked goods you'd love to have the comforting flavors of fall.  Replace spice amounts in recipes with this spice mix in an equal amount.  For example, if your recipe says to use a teaspoon of cinnamon, replace the teaspoon of cinnamon with a teaspoon of pumpkin spice.
