3 Easy Coffee Drinks to Make at Home (Perfect with Dessert)
Coffee and dessert just belong together.
Not in a fussy, go-out-to-a-restaurant kind of way… but in that simple end-of-the-day moment when you want something a little special without making a big production out of it.
The good news? You don’t need any special equipment to make a really good “dessert coffee” at home.
If you can brew a strong cup of coffee and warm a little milk, you’re already halfway there. In this post, I’m going to show you three easy coffee drinks you can make in your own kitchen, and exactly what to serve with them when you want that coffee shop feel without leaving the house.
You can absolutely make all of these drinks with your regular drip coffee maker.
But if you want a slightly richer, more full-bodied cup, something that feels a little closer to what you’d get at a coffee shop, a French press is a simple way to get there.
No complicated settings, no learning curve. Just good coffee.
How to Make Strong Coffee in a French Press
You’ll need:
Coarsely ground coffee, 1 tablespoon per 4 ounces of water.
Hot water (just off the boil)
A French press
Basic method:
-
Add coffee to the press (about 1 tablespoon per 4 ounces of water).
-
Bring your water to a boil. Take it off the burner and let it sit for about 30 seconds. (That's just off the boil.) Pour in hot water and give it a gentle stir.
Let it sit for 4 minutes.
Press the plunger down slowly.
Pour and enjoy.
For stronger coffee (perfect for these recipes):
Use a
little more coffee or a little less water. You’re aiming for a bold,
concentrated flavor that still comes through once milk or flavorings are
added.
You can stop right there… or turn it into something special with one of the recipes below.
Now let’s turn that into something a little special.
Cappuccino
A simple, cozy classic you can make at home in minutes.
There’s something about a cappuccino that instantly makes coffee feel a little more special.
This is my go-to when I want something warm, comforting, and just a little indulgent, without any extra fuss.
Makes one 12-ounce serving
What you’ll need:-
4 tablespoons ground coffee, or 4 ounces strong brewed coffee
1/2 cup milk
Ground cinnamon (optional)
How to make it:
Brew a small, strong cup of coffee (about 4 ounces).
-
Warm the milk in the microwave for 30–45 seconds, until hot but not boiling.
-
Froth the milk for about 30 seconds (a whisk or jar works just fine).
-
Pour coffee into your cup, add the milk (holding back foam), then spoon foam on top.
Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
What to serve with it
This cappuccino pairs beautifully with one of my favorite cookies, something with a little spice and warmth.
The warm cinnamon on top of the coffee brings out those same cozy, spiced flavors in these Gingersnaps. For an old-fashioned treat, try these Date-Filled Cookies.
Salted Caramel Latte
Sweet, a little indulgent, and surprisingly easy to make.
If you like a flavored coffee drink that feels like a treat, this one is
hard to beat.
It has just enough caramel to feel special without being over the top, and you can easily adjust the sweetness to your taste.
Makes one 12-ounce serving
What you’ll need:
- 4 tablespoons ground coffee, or 4 ounces strong brewed coffee
2 tablespoons salted caramel sauce
1/2 cup milk
Extra caramel sauce for topping
How to make it:
Brew a strong 4-ounce cup of coffee.
Stir the caramel sauce into the hot milk.
Warm the milk mixture for 30–45 seconds.
Froth until foamy.
-
Pour the milk into the coffee, holding back foam, then spoon foam on top.
Drizzle with extra caramel sauce.
If you enjoy a flavored coffee now and then, this is one of those recipes you'll come back to again and again.
What to serve with it
This latte pairs perfectly with one of my all-time favorite desserts, Salted Caramel Cheesecake.
The caramel notes in the coffee echo the dessert's sweetness, and the creamy texture makes every sip taste even richer.
Kahlua Amaretto Coffee
A cozy after-dinner coffee that feels a little special.
This one is my personal favorite.
It’s the kind of coffee you make when the day is winding down, and you want something warm, relaxing, and just a little bit indulgent.
Makes one 12-ounce serving
What you’ll need:
8 ounces of strong-brewed coffee
1 ounce Kahlua
1 ounce amaretto
1/4 cup heavy cream, lightly sweetened
Ground cinnamon
Cinnamon stick (optional)
How to make it:
Brew a strong cup of coffee.
Stir in the Kahlua and amaretto.
Top with sweetened whipped cream.
Sprinkle with cinnamon and add a cinnamon stick if you like.
What to serve with it
This coffee is especially good with my Amaretti Cookies.
The almond flavor in the cookies pairs perfectly with the warm, slightly nutty flavors in the coffee, making it feel like a restaurant-style dessert experience at home.
A Simple Way to Make Coffee Feel Special
You don’t need a fancy machine or complicated techniques to enjoy coffee like this at home.
Sometimes it’s just about slowing down for a few minutes, making your coffee a little stronger, adding something extra, and pairing it with a dessert you already love.
That’s the kind of everyday treat that’s easy to make—and even easier to enjoy.
Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteThat's a great observation, Brandon. You are so right! There are some drips with this coffee maker, but there is also a drip stop switch to give you control. It doesn't bother me at all. As you note, the lack of a drip tray makes this few easy to clean.
