Keeping Produce Fresh

Fresh produce.  We want to have a healthy diet that is filled with lots of fresh produce.  That can be a challenge with our busy lives.  Fresh produce has a relatively short shelf life, making it hard to keep for any length of time.  If you are anything like me you have bought lots of lovely fresh produce having the best intentions to cook it up into healthy recipes for your family, only to find it withering in the produce drawer of your refrigerator within a couple of days.

About eight months ago I started buying broccoli florets from my local wholesale club.

The 40 ounce package of broccoli was reasonably priced and contained just the florets, eliminating much of the waste from the broccoli stalks not favored by my family.  I noticed this symbol on the package, but didn't know what it was all about.

What I did come to know is that I could buy this large package of broccoli and it would stay fresh in my refrigerator for eight to ten days.  I was impressed.

Recently, I was approached by Clearly Fresh Bags www.clearlyfreshbags.com to try these bags utilizing the same keep fresh technology.  I jumped at the opportunity.   Jumped, I tell you.  I have been so impressed by how well the bag containing my broccoli florets worked I couldn't wait to try the bags with other produce in my home.  My sample package of 10 bags, valued at $3.99 has arrived.

Clearly Fresh Bags

I'm planning to run some experiments using these bags with fresh produce and report the results to you on the blog.  After all, my new vegetable garden is producing lots of lovely fresh produce that needs to be picked and stored and the grocery produce section is overflowing.  This is a perfect time of year to test this product.

My Garden Full of Fresh Produce

Would you like to experiment along with me?  You can do so by ordering your own sample of the Clearly Fresh bags at a 15% discount on all orders placed in the next 15 days. The offer code for the 15% off is "JOD15".   In order to receive the 15% off discount you will need to check out through the clearlyfreshbags.com website and enter the promo code when you are in the shopping cart/checkout prompt.  This code is good for the next 15 days, or while supplies last.

The Clearly Fresh Bags website says the bags work best on:
• Bananas
• Avocados
• Apples
• Mangos
• Papayas
• Asparagus
• Broccoli
• Carrots
• Lettuce
• Cucumbers
• Berries
• and more

The bags work by creating an ideal environment for storage either in your refrigerator or on your counter using the BreatheWay technology.  These bags are reclosable and recyclable, but they recommend that we not wash the bags because water reduces the effectiveness of the BreatheWay technology.

I'll be trying these bags over the next month and sharing the results with you here.  If you order the bags as well, I'd love to hear what you think about them, too.  Be sure to order them in the next 15 days to get the 15% discount.  I have high hopes for these bags.  I hope they work well.

I received one free package of Clearly Fresh bags valued at $3.99 to review.

  1. I might try this! We totally lose a lot of produce, esp what we get from the farmer's market.

How to Deal with Carpenter Bees

One of the things I like least about this time of year is the pests.  I'm talking about the insects and critters that wreak havoc with my home and garden. The pest of the month is the carpenter bee.  Last month the battle was with ants and in April, we were fighting the annual infestation of winter moth caterpillars that are trying to kill my beautiful weeping cherry tree.  Those battles seem to be behind me and for now, the focus is on the pesky carpenter bees. You might be wondering what the heck a carpenter bee is.  I never even knew they existed until a couple of years ago.  You can see the backside of one in the picture below.  They might be mistaken for a big bumblebee, but their abdomen is shiny black in comparison to the fuzzy abdomen of the bumblebee.  You'll often see them hovering in the air around the roofline of your home.  If you see them, you'll want to pay attention.  They may take up residence in your home.
