Rum Punch for a Party!

Can you make a rum punch ahead of time?

This rum punch recipe is a make-ahead recipe I use whenever we are having a large group for a summer picnic or barbecue.  Use the recipe below as your baseline and double or triple the ingredients as needed.

How do you serve rum punch?

You'll need a large container for storage and room enough in your refrigerator to keep it cool.  My favorite way to serve the rum punch is in these pretty glass pitchers or a beverage dispenser for self-serve convenience.

Rum Punch for a Party
I like to use multiple beverage dispensers and include plenty of water and non-alcoholic beverages in them, too.  Clear glass is always my favorite choice so the contents can easily be seen, especially when they are colorful like this rum punch.

Clear glassware is best for serving rum punch, too.  Part of the fun of rum punch cocktails is the color.  You'll want to be able to enjoy the whole experience so choose clear glassware.  Opt for clear plastic beverage cups over colored ones when serving at a picnic or barbecue.

How much alcohol do you use in rum punch?

You can easily adjust this recipe. As written, the recipe serves 8-10.

To make one cocktail at a time:  To make this rum punch one cocktail at a time, just replace the word "cup" with the word "ounce". For a fun twist, reserve the grenadine to float on the top of the cocktail.  It will sink to the bottom and create a festive effect.

For a mocktail, just replace the rum with your favorite lemon-lime soda.

What fruit makes the best garnish for a rum punch?

Use pineapple, lime, and orange slices as garnish. Don't forget a cherry!

Scaling RumPunch for a Large Party

A reader asked for help in planning how to scale this recipe for 250 guests at a party.  Here's what you need to consider:

To scale up the recipe to serve 250 people, you'll need to determine the scaling factor, and then multiply the quantities of each ingredient by that factor. In this case, you're scaling up from 8 servings to 250 servings, so the scaling factor is 250/8 = 31.25. This assumes each person will have one 8-ounce drink, consisting of one ounce of each of the ingredients.

Serving a beverage over a full glass of ice can reduce the volume of the liquid in each serving due to the displacement of the ice. The amount of the beverage per serving is not reduced by half, but it is somewhat diminished depending on the volume of ice in the glass.

The extent to which the volume is reduced depends on the size of the glass and the amount of ice used. If you serve the beverage over a full glass of ice, you should consider the ice's volume and how much it displaces in the glass. This displacement varies depending on the size and shape of the ice cubes and the glass.

If, for example, you use a standard 8-ounce (240 ml) glass filled with 4 ounces (120 ml) of ice and pour the cocktail over the ice, the volume of the beverage in the glass will be reduced by the volume of the ice. In this case, you would have approximately 4 ounces (120 ml) of the beverage, not the full 8 ounces (240 ml).

So, while the amount per serving is not reduced by half, it is reduced by the volume of the ice in the glass. If you want to ensure each serving contains a specific amount of the beverage, you may need to account for the ice displacement when making the drink and adjust the recipe accordingly.

Here are the quantities of each ingredient to serve 250 people:, 8 ounces per person:

1. Lime Juice: 1 cup x 31.25 = 31.25 cups (approximately 7.8 liters)
2. Grenadine: 2 cups x 31.25 = 62.5 cups (approximately 15.6 liters)
3. Spiced Rum: 2 cups x 31.25 = 62.5 cups (approximately 15.6 liters)
4. Light Rum or Coconut Rum: 1 cup x 31.25 = 31.25 cups (approximately 7.8 liters)
5. Pineapple Juice: 2 cups x 31.25 = 62.5 cups (approximately 15.6 liters)
6. Orange Juice: 2 cups x 31.25 = 62.5 cups (approximately 15.6 liters)
Fruit for garnish will be additional.

For 4 ounce servings, cut the amounts in half.

Please note that when preparing such large quantities, it's essential to have the appropriate containers for mixing and serving, as well as a method for serving that many people. Also, consider your guests' preferences and any local laws or regulations related to the serving of alcoholic beverages.

Also, this information is provided as a starting point. I am not a caterer or a party planner.  You should use your judgment to decide the final amounts.

  2. I want to make this for a wedding for 100 people. How many bottles of rum do you think I'll need?

    1. You’ll need to do some math to figure this out. For one drink you’ll use 2 ounces of dark rum and one ounce of regular rum. For 100 people, each having one drink you’ll need 200 ounces of dark rum and 100 ounces of regular rum. Convert the ounces to liters to determine the number of bottles. Everyone will not have a drink and some will have more than one, so you’ll need to adjust the total ounces by some factor. I’m not a caterer, so I can’t tell you what tha would be. A caterer or liquor store might be able to help.
