Making Pizza at Home

Do you like to have a casual, relaxing Friday night meal?  Pizza has been a favorite Friday night dinner in my family for a long time.  When our boys were younger we would often go to a local pizza restaurant on Friday nights.  Now we like to make our pizza at home.

More often than not, our pizza will be our long-time favorite, pepperoni, and cheese.  Sometimes we add sliced mushrooms for a pepperoni, mushroom and cheese pizza.  Whatever the kind of pizza, I always start with homemade pizza dough, made in my bread machine.

Bread Machine Pizza Dough

Pizza Dough
  • 1 1/2 cups plus 3 T water, 80°F
  • 2 T extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 T sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 T powdered milk
  • 4 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 2 tsp bread machine yeast

Place all of the ingredients in the bread machine set on the dough cycle.  When the dough cycle is complete, place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover and refrigerate until needed.  Makes 2 thick pizzas.

Pizza Dough and Toppings
To make your Friday night pizza:
Assemble your ingredients.  For a pepperoni, mushroom  and cheese pizza you need:

  • pepperoni, sliced thin
  • 6 oz. fresh mozzarella ball, sliced
  • 2 oz. shredded block mozzarella
  • 2 oz. white mushrooms, sliced
  • Marinara sauce (your favorite bottled is fine)
  • 2 oz. shredded Parmesan or Romano cheese

Place a pizza stone on the bottom rack of your oven and preheat oven to 500°F.  You'll want to let the oven preheat for at least 15 minutes.  Thirty minutes will be even better.  Place half of the pizza dough on a flat pan covered with parchment paper.  Form a 12" round.

Spoon marinara sauce over the pizza dough.  Not too much, just enough to create a base for the rest of the ingredients.  Place the slices of fresh mozzarella over the pizza dough.

Next, add the shredded mozzarella and Romano or Parmesan cheese.

Your pizza is ready for the oven.  Slide the pizza and parchment paper directly onto your pizza stone.  Cook for 8-12 minutes.  Check the bottom crust before removing from the oven.  It should be brown.  Here's our finished pizza:

Yummy!  It doesn't look pretty, but oh, it tastes wonderful!
