Chocolate Mug Cake: Should You or Shouldn't You?

Chocolate mug cake.  If you are like me you've seen recipes for mug cakes all over the blogosphere and have seen pictures of mug cakes posted on Pinterest.  If you are like me you thought, hmmm...Microwaved cake?  Five minutes?  Really?

I wanted to test this concept but wasn't really in a big hurry to do so.  After all, skepticism is well known to me.  Last week, though, I had the urge for chocolate cake and with none in sight, I remembered chocolate mug cake.  Aha, I thought.  This was definitely my time to give microwaved mug cake a go.  The ingredients and method are simple enough.  Mix the dry ingredients with the wet.  Pop a cup into the microwave.  Set the timer for three minutes and before you know it you are eating chocolate cake!

Donna's Chocolate Mug Cake
Serves one

Chocolate Mug Cake Ingredients
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons fat-free milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • a few chocolate chips, I use Ghiradelli double chocolate chips
  • a few drops of vanilla extract
  • Confectioner's sugar, for garnish
  • Ice cream
Directions
In a small bowl or your mug, mix together the dry ingredients until well combined.  Mix together the egg, milk, oil and vanilla extract until well combined.

Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients in the mug, stirring well to be sure all the dry ingredients are incorporated and the mixture is smooth.  Drop the chocolate chips into the center of the mug.

One Mug Ready for the Microwave
Place your mug in the center of your 1000 watt microwave oven.  Set the timer for three minutes and cook your mug cake on high power.  It will rise up over the edge of the mug and then settle down.  Remove the cake from the microwave and turn it out onto a plate.  Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with your favorite ice cream.

The Baked Mug Cake
The verdict?  The cake is dense and spongy.  Not exactly what you'd expect in a cake.  You will definitely want the powdered sugar and ice cream to make it more palatable.  The chocolate flavor was there and the mug cake satisfied my chocolate craving.

You'll Want Powdered Sugar and Ice Cream
Will I  make this chocolate mug cake regularly?  No, but it works when you have a craving that you want to satisfy in less than ten minutes.  I must say, though, I find it just as easy to make molten lava cakes.  They only take ten minutes to bake and the result is far superior.  Given a choice, I'd opt for the molten lava cake every time.
