Caramelized Onion Dip

This caramelized onion dip has been a favorite in my family for years. It’s rich and creamy, packed with sweet caramelized onion flavor, and has just a touch of heat from cayenne pepper. Whenever I serve it at a party, it disappears quickly.

It’s also one of my favorite appetizers for easy entertaining because it’s actually better when you make it ahead. Give the dip a day or two in the refrigerator and the flavors have time to come together. You can even freeze it, so I often make a full batch and save some for another gathering.

I swear to you that if you bring this dip to a party it will be the first to go and you will be asked to bring it to every party you attend from now to eternity.

The only part that requires a little patience is caramelizing the onions. Give them about 45 minutes to cook low and slow until they’re soft, deeply browned, and full of flavor. Don’t rush this step. Those caramelized onions are what make this dip so much better than an ordinary onion dip.

And don’t be tempted to leave out the cayenne pepper. It doesn’t make the dip hot. It adds just enough background heat to balance all that creamy, savory onion flavor.

Serve this caramelized onion dip with potato chips, crackers, or toasted French bread for an easy appetizer that works for holidays, football parties, family gatherings, or anytime you need a reliable crowd-pleasing dip.

If you make the full recipe you will have enough for a big party or enough to serve now and freeze for later.  Yes, you can freeze this dip.  I do it all the time, so I always have a dip ready to go during this busy time of year.

Don't make this dip the day you will be serving it.  Trust me on this. Caramelized onion dip gets better as it sits in your fridge.  You definitely want to make it the day before you need it.  Three days before you need it will be even better!

Ingredients

Caramelized Onion Dip

Instructions

  1. Cut onions in half and slice thinly.
  2. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add onions, cayenne, salt & pepper, and saute for 10 minutes, until softened and translucent.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the onions, stirring occasionally for 20-40 minutes more, until the onions are deeply browned and caramelized.
  4. Chop the onions with the back of your spoon when you stir them. Don't rush the cooking. Cool the onions completely.
  5. Beat cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise together until smooth. Add the cooled onion mixture to the cream cheese mixture and mix well. Thin with a little milk if necessary to get the consistency you want.
  6. Chill for a couple of hours, or overnight prior to serving. This dip gets better after sitting in the refrigerator, so make it a day, or more, ahead of when you will serve it.
  7. Serve with potato chips, crackers, or toasted French bread slices.

Artisan Bread in Your Bread Machine

Finally. Artisan Bread from Your Bread Machine Yes, Really. If you want to make artisan-style bread using your bread machine, the secret is simple: use the dough cycle, then bake the loaf in a preheated Dutch oven. This method gives you a crisp crust and chewy crumb without any hand kneading. If you use your bread machine regularly, you already know what it does well. It mixes, kneads, and handles the first rise beautifully. It is a dependable helper in the kitchen. What it does not do especially well is produce that deep golden, crackly crust we associate with artisan bread. The good news is you do not need to give up the ease of your bread machine to get that result. You simply need to change how the bread is baked. Today I’m showing you how to use your bread machine’s dough cycle and bake the loaf in a Dutch oven for a crusty, bakery-style result.
