This is a simple drop cookie that you can easily customize.  Oatmeal cookies with add-ins are the best!

What Is a Drop Cookie?

A "drop cookie" is a type of cookie that is made by dropping spoonfuls of cookie dough onto a baking sheet, as opposed to rolling out the dough and cutting it into shapes with cookie cutters. Drop cookies are known for their simplicity and ease of preparation, making them a popular choice for home bakers of all skill levels. Young bakers often begin with drop cookies.

Here are the basic steps for how drop cookies are typically made:

1. Prepare the Dough: First, you prepare the cookie dough. This involves mixing ingredients like flour, sugar, butter, or other fats, eggs, and flavorings (such as vanilla extract or chocolate chips) together in a bowl. The dough should have a relatively soft and sticky consistency.

2. Dropping the Dough: Using a spoon or a cookie scoop, you drop portions of the dough onto a baking sheet. The size and spacing of the dough portions can vary depending on the recipe and your preference, but they are typically about 1 to 2 inches apart to allow room for the cookies to spread as they bake.

3. Baking: The baking sheet is then placed in a preheated oven, and the cookies are baked until they are golden brown around the edges and set in the center. The baking time can vary depending on the recipe and the size of the cookies but typically ranges from 8 to 12 minutes.

4. Cooling: Once the cookies are done baking, they are removed from the oven and left to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes. This allows them to firm up slightly before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Drop cookies are versatile and can be customized in many ways. You can add various mix-ins, such as chocolate chips, nuts, dried fruits, or spices, to create different flavors and textures. Common varieties of drop cookies include chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies, peanut butter cookies, and sugar cookies. 

This cookie highlights oatmeal, coconut, and chocolate chips. Choose the chocolate chips you like best.  Milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate chips will each add a burst of slightly different flavor.

I chose to use unsweetened coconut flakes in this cookie but you can use sweetened coconut if you want additional sweetness.  The coconut adds a yummy chewiness to the cookie.

Tips for Baking Success

Bake times vary. The bake time for the cookie will vary with the size of your cookies and your oven.  

Use a cookie scoop for uniform cookies. A large-sized scoop will make cookies that are about three inches in size.  

The cookie-baking pan you use may vary your results. Start by checking your cookies at ten minutes of baking time.  My cookies take fourteen minutes in my oven.
