It's National Coffee Day

September 29, 2011 is National Coffee Day.  Are you a coffee lover?  If yes, join the millions who consume 400 billion cups of coffee each year in celebrating this beverage today.

Making Coffee at Home

I bet you are wondering where coffee came from.  One legend involves a sixth-century Ethiopian goatherd who discovered his goats frolicking from one coffee shrub to another.  He noticed they were eating the coffee berries and attributed their energy to the berries.  As a result, he began experimenting with the seeds.  Popularity of his brewed concoction grew and a century later coffee emerged as an Arabian beverage.

My Favorite Coffee
There are several species of small evergreen bush that produce coffee berries.  It is those berries that contain the coffee seeds, what we know as beans.  Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and dried.  The desired flavor is achieved by roasting the beans.

Each of us has a favorite way to prepare our daily coffee, just ask any barista.

My way is decaf, cream only, with a couple shakes of cinnamon.

How do you like your coffee?

Coffee drinkers will be happy to know that this month coffee has been in the news as a result of two studies highlighting possible benefits of drinking coffee.

Do you prepare your coffee at home or prefer to stop by a local coffee shop?  I usually make my coffee at home, but particularly like spending time at locally owned coffee shops that have a unique, or eclectic feel.

A Eclectic Coffee Shop
I'm not saying that the national chains don't have a place in our lives.  After all, It's great to know you can get a consistent cup of coffee when you are on the go.

A National Coffee Shop
But those eclectic local shops are places are perfect for meeting friends, sharing good conversation and building relationships.

Whatever your favorite place may be, today will be a great day to take a coffee break (or two) to celebrate this favorite beverage.  After all, it's National Coffee Day!

  1. I love coffee. I drink mine simple black, no sugar no cream, no flavours... just a good cup of pure strong coffee! Though I love me some sweet cookies or cake with it :) I prefer local coffee shops over big chains.

  2. Sarah, enjoy National Coffee Day...with a cookie! ;)
