Conquering Broken Nails

I've been having a lot of trouble growing my fingernails lately. By lately I mean for at least the last five years.   This is frustrating for me because prior to this I had strong, healthy nails.  Not anymore.  Now I have nails that do nothing but break and peel.  Getting them to grow out past the tip of my fingers is viewed as an achievement these days.

I take care of my hands and nails.  I use hand lotion to fight dryness.  I wear rubber gloves when I wash dishes and garden gloves when I muck around in the dirt.  So abuse is not the cause of my nail dilemma.

Why am I telling you this?  Well, I recently started using some OPI nail polish that seems to be improving my nails.  I should tell you that I do my own nails.  I have never, ever had my nails done by a manicurist.  I know, that's hard to believe in this day in age, but it is true.  I don't like the idea of manicures, pedicures, facials, or spa treatments.  I have issues.

Enough about my issues.  Back to my new nail polish.  I am using the OPI Acrylic Nail Base Coat and OPI Nail Lacquer in Coney Island Cotton Candy.

Here's my scary hand without any polish on it.

See how I actually have some nails?  I attribute the nail length to using the nail polish.

This is a close up of my thumb after applying one coat of the base coat and one coat of the nail lacquer.  See how natural the color is?  I'm not fond of the wild nail colors that seem to be in fashion today, so the gentle pink of this Coney Island Cotton Candy floats my boat.

Here's a picture of a few more of my fingers.  Both the base coat and the nail lacquer apply easily and dry quickly.  The applicator brush is wide, making it easy to apply the polish in one or two swipes. I'll apply another coat of the nail lacquer tomorrow for additional strength.  In my approximately six weeks experience, chipping is minimal and the polish will last about five days before a new application is required.

I'm thinking I've found a new best friend for my nails.  Do you have a favorite nail polish?

Disclosure: This is NOT an advertisement for OPI nail products.   I'm just sharin'.

  1. Ok, so I love OPI.

Also, I love manicures and pedicures. I only started doing them about 5 years ago and it saddens me how long I lived without them.

But like you, I do them myself most of the time. Because I can. And because I'm cheap.

That said, I had great nails right after I had Wee 'Burb. And then the last few months have been crap. Mine have been peeling lately so bad! Although I'm not always so great at wearing gloves when I clean.

Anyway, I love OPI and will totally try these!

  2. I have the same issues with my nails. Most of the time I use Hard As Nails just to keep them from breaking....but I am always open to new suggestions! I will definitely check out the base coat, and maybe a funky color to go on top! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Thanks for sharing the fact that you have 'issues' and have never had a manicure, pedicure, etc. I am the same way and thought I was the only female on earth who felt that way! I just won a free pedicure or facial at a local hair salon and am giving it to my daughter.
