Yesterday's post about healthy breakfasts made me stop and think about whether I have been keeping a healthy lifestyle lately. Have you noticed all the TV advertisements about exercise and weight loss? This seems to be the time of year for folks to get on the diet and exercise bandwagon. I guess I'm no different from the rest.
About this time of year four years ago I got really serious about diet and exercise myself. I lost 47 pounds in six months. It wasn't easy. I made big changes in my diet and began a regular exercise program. I went from never exercising to 45-60 minutes of exercise, a minimum of 5 days per week! For the most part I've been able to sustain this healthy lifestyle.
Now here's the big BUT...
In the past couple of months I have fallen off the bandwagon and broken the four simple healthy lifestyle rules I try to live by.
Could it have been these evil Christmas morning cinnamon rolls?
Or maybe the delicious Clementine sidecars at the Ocean House?
Certainly not the decadent caramel pecan cheesecake from the wonderful cooks at King Arthur Flour!
And certainly not the molten lava cakes from New Years Eve!
For whatever reason, I am starting 2011 with a bit more jiggle in my wiggle, if you know what I mean!
So it is time for me to dust off my Four Simple Healthy Lifestyle Rules and refresh my memory. I thought I would share the rules with you in case you are in need of some healthy lifestyle inspiration as well. Are you ready? Let's go...
Healthy Lifestyle Rules
1. Confront My Truth and Own It!
I must know the important numbers impacting my health and own up to how much they need to change. Is my blood pressure too high? Is my glucose number out of whack? Have I gained weight? Is my BMI (body mass index) edging out of ideal range?
2. Plan What I Eat
Daily food and drink should be thoughtfully planned. My daily breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks must be purchased, prepared and packaged in advance to remove any temptatation to eat non-healthy alternatives. I must remember I eat to live, not live to eat.
3. Eat Less
My portions must be controlled. Measure, weigh, count as appropriate. Never eat out of a carton or package. Eat thoughtfully, not mindlessly. I must remember the phrase, "From my lips to my hips"!
4. Move More
I must make the time for exercise every day. No excuses! I know I need to cut 3500 calories to lose one pound. So, if I burn 400 calories per exercise session...
Whew! That's it. Four easy rules. I can do this. I'm getting back on the healthy lifestyle bandwagon today. Are you with me?
